In Fes I visited the famous tanneries and carpet making/ weaving industries with 2 French guys who were also staying at my hostel and who I made friends with. Both the tanneries and weaving were based these were set in the maze of the medina. The tannery might be one of the oldest cooperatives in the world dating back to the 13th century and receiving government backing and finance today. The whole Medina area really is steeped in history like the University of Al Karaouine which was the first university in the world.
Today I have arrived in Immouzer Kader which is right by the Atlas Mountains and have met Ali from Al Amana finance (one of the biggest on Morocco) and I have been able to compare it to a nearby micro-loan initiative called Greenside Development. You can tell that all the people working in Greenside really care about their community and it is interesting seeing microfinance from a smaller institutions view point. I will have to try and upload a picture of the mountain and get to a computer to upload those!
Thanks for all your comments and interest and I will post again soon. I should be doing so more micro enterprise visits again this afternoon then slowly making my way to Casablanca via Fez on Tuesday/Wednesday.
